“Wherever you are, be all there.”
- Jim Elliot
I was in high school when I came across the above quote by Jim Elliot. I carried this quote with me as I went off to college, but it wasn’t until the start of my sophomore year that I began to actually take hold of what Elliot was saying.
As a dreamer, I have the tendency to constantly look forward to what’s going to come next – daydreaming about tomorrow, next year, or the next phase of life. I can sometimes forget about the here and now. As my freshman year came to a close and my sophomore year began, I realized I had not been all there. I was not living presently in the place God had placed me.
Jim Elliot reminds me to live in the moment and enjoy even the littlest things. Without having to give up my excitement for what’s to come, I’m reminded to savor each and every moment, feeling, and experience wherever I am. And this is what photography can do.
Photography captures a moment in time. A time when you are unapologetically yourself, and savoring the moment you are in. Maybe it’s seeing your spouse for the first time on your wedding day, or the celebration of saying “yes!” to forever with your best friend, or maybe it’s an attempt at stopping time and cherishing your children before they all grow up. It’s in these moments that you’re forced to live in the moment and take in the magnitude of why you are being photographed where you are. An authentic photograph captures that moment, feeling, or experience, not so you can dream and look forward to the next big “photograph worthy” event, but so that you can look back and feel the way that you felt when you were living in the moment. When you were all there.
